Cathedral City, Calif. - The #18 UNLV Rebels had its eight-game unbeaten streak snapped by Fresno State in the Palm Springs Classic Thursday night in Cathedral City, Calif. The Bulldogs won by a 2-0 margin and improved to 6-1 on the year, while the Rebels fell to 9-2-1.
The game stood scoreless through the first three innings until Fresno State strung together a walk, a single and a double to plate the first run of the game. Ashley White delivered the big hit of the inning to left to score Aja Scheuber, who reached via a walk, from second.
Fresno State added an insurance run in the fifth. Jenna Cervantez led off the frame with a walk and moved to third after Laura Briones allowed a passed ball and threw wildly to second. Caitlin Stiglich brought Cervantez home with a ground out to Caitlyn Paus at second.
Stephanie Bregante (5-2) took the loss for UNLV, as she gave up two runs (one unearned) on five hits. She struck out eight and walked five.
Morgan Malloh (5-0) registered the victory for the Bulldogs. Mallooh struck out 11 in the complete-game effort. Her only blemish was a hit given up to Briones in second.
UNLV returns to action on Friday with games against Michigan State (10:00 am) and Texas (12:30 pm).
