SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State outscored UNLV 25-5 over the final 10 minutes of the game to claim a 68-50 victory in Mountain West Conference women's basketball action from the Cox Arena on Wednesday night. The loss sent UNLV to 8-18 on the season, 4-9 in league play, while the Aztecs improved to 14-12 overall, 5-9 in the MWC.
UNLV had trailed at the half 31-28, but made seven of its first 11 shots from the floor coming out of halftime, and led 45-43 with 10:24 on the clock on a Shamela Hampton layup. The Lady Rebels then went completely cold from the floor, and the Aztecs ran off 11 unanswered points for a 54-45 lead with 5:15 to play. The Aztecs kept up their defensive play, and would hold UNLV to just one field goal out of 15 attempts over the final 10:24 of the game. SDSU meanwhile improved their performance on offense from the opening 10 minutes to the final 10, as the team opened up making just 2-of-10 from the floor, but then made 11 of its last 17 shots from the field.
The first half was tight for the entire way, with UNLV leading for the majority of the first 14 minutes. However, after going up 17-14 on a Sequoia Holmes three-pointer with 11:19 left, the Lady Rebels had another scoring drought, this time going 6:26 without a basket. San Diego State wasn't much better, scoring just two baskets during that run, but the second basket, a trey from Jene Morris, gave the Aztecs a 19-17 edge with 5:36 left, and the home team would take a three-point lead.
UNLV was led by Holmes with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Hampton posted her fifth double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds. UNLV was held to 35.6% (21-of-59) shooting for the game, 3-of-11 from three-point range for 27.3%, and was 5-of-7 at the line for 71.4%. UNLV did hold a 40-36 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 24 times.
Paris Johnson led SDSU with 20 points and eight rebounds, and Morris added 19 points. Allison Duffy also scored in double figure with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Aztecs finished shooting 42.4% (25-of-59) from the floor, 3-of-12 (25.0%) from three-point range, and was 15-of-20 at the line for 75.0%.
UNLV will continue its two-game road swing this Saturday, when it faces TCU in Fort Worth, Texas in a 12 pm (PST) contest.
