LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior Wink Adams was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, marking his second weekly honor of the season and third for his career. Adams shared this week's award with BYU's Lee Cummard.
Adams, a 6-foot guard from Houston, Texas, led UNLV to a 2-0 mark last week with wins at TCU (70-58) and at home against New Mexico (79-60), which were the squad's fourth and fifth consecutive victories.
Against TCU, Adams scored a game-high 25 points, 18 of which came in the second half. He also tallied five assists, three rebounds and one steal against the Horned Frogs. He made three 3-pointers in the second half and helped UNLV hold off every rally the Horned Frogs made. After a 7-0 run that pulled TCU to within 53-47, he made a 3-pointer with 8:10 left and his last 3-pointer gave UNLV its biggest lead of the game at 66-49 with 4:46 left. He finished the game 8-of-17 from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range and made all four of his free throw attempts.
In the Runnin' Rebels' win over New Mexico, Adams scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor, including making three 3-pointers before the intermission. He finished the game shooting 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from the field to go with four rebounds, three steals and an assist. His jumper with 10:05 left in the game gave UNLV its biggest lead of the game at 64-34.
For the week, Adams averaged 24.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 54.8 percent (17-for-31) from the floor and 47.1 percent from 3-point range (8-for-17).
UNLV, which is tied for the MWC lead with a 6-1 league mark, has recorded its best-ever start to a MWC season and its best start in league play since 1998-99 when the Runnin' Rebels started 7-1 in the WAC. UNLV's 17-4 overall record ties last year's 21-game start.
The Runnin' Rebels will travel to Salt Lake City for their next game as they take on Utah on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. PST. The game will be televised live on the Mtn. (Cox Digital Cable channel 334 in Las Vegas).
