Final Stats
SAN DIEGO - The UNLV Rebels dropped a 4-0 decision on the road to the San Diego State Aztecs in both teams' Mountain West Conference opener. UNLV falls to 20-21-1 overall and 0-1 in league play, while SDSU improves to 28-10 and 1-0.
The Rebels had their opportunities to score, but were unable to plate any runners against Christina Ross. UNLV tallied five hits and left six runners on-base. Three of those runners were left in scoring position.
The Aztecs took a 1-0 lead after one inning of play when Megan McDonald walked with the bases loaded. SDSU put two runners on following back-to-back hits by Tamani Wells and Tonye McCorkle. Erin Floros filled the bags when her infield pop-up was dropped by Stephanie Bregante.
In the second inning, SDSU extended the lead to two runs when Wells tripled home Brittany Knudson, who previously reached on a double.
Wells was instrumental in adding another run to the scoreboard, as her sacrifice fly in the fourth pushed the SDSU lead to three runs. Christine Kulick opened up the frame with a walk and then was pinch-run for by Jessica Camello. Jen Wisneski followed with a single to put runners at first and second prior to Knudson's sacrifice bunt that pushed both up 60-feet.
SDSU added a fourth run to its tally in the sixth with help from a single through the right side by McCorkle to score Knudson from second. Knudson had reached on a fielder's choice and then took second with a stolen base.
Ross improves to 17-8 with the complete-game victory. Besides giving up five hits, she struck out five and walked two.
Bregante falls to 11-12 with the 6.0 inning loss. She surrendered four runs (three earned) on nine hits. She walked four and fanned one.
The Rebels will face these same Aztecs on Sunday, April 6 at 1:00 pm at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
