Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (25-40-1 overall, 5-15 Mountain West Conference) lost its final game of the 2008 season on "Senior Day" to the #19 San Diego State Aztecs, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. The win gives SDSU the MWC Championship with a 15-5 league mark and 43-15 overall record.

After stranding seven runners through the first four innings of play, the Aztecs struck for a run in the fifth inning with a bases-loaded walk providing the only offense through the first six frames. SDSU got a two-out infield single by Tamani Wells to keep the inning alive off of Heather Slettvet. The Aztecs then were patient at the plate as three consecutive walks were taken with Lindsey Marquez recording an RBI on the third free-pass of the inning.

The Aztecs scored five more runs in the top of the seventh with all scores coming with two out. Stephanie Bregante entered the game and allowed a single to Wells and a walk to Megan McDonald, while mixing in the first two outs of the inning. Bregante then walked the bases loaded before Tonye McCorkle nailed a pinch-hit single up the middle. McCorkle wound up on second after an error in centerfield by Brittany Bolinger that cleared the bases and pushed the score to 4-0. SDSU managed to get back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to 6-0.

SDSU's Christina Ross kept the Rebel offense at bay, as she only allowed two base runners in the game. Both runners were left stranded in scoring position, as the team's best opportunity to score occurred in the fifth inning. Laura Briones nailed a one-out double down the left-field line before being pinch-run for by Cheynah Farley. A fly-out to right moved Farley to third, but Ross was able to get the final out of the inning via a strikeout.

Ross improved to 30-12 with the complete-game win. She struck out six, while allowing the two hits.

Slettvet suffered the loss and dropped to 4-16 to end the year. She threw 4.2 innings and gave up one run on six hits. She struck out four and walked four.

Traci Odegard, who relieved Slettvet in the fifth inning, threw 1.1 innings and gave up one hit.

Bregante closed out the final inning and was touched for five runs on four hits. She struck out one and walked two.

After the game, the Rebels celebrated the careers of their five seniors: Caitlyn Paus, Rosa Ordaz, Sandy Nakamura, Stephanie Bean and Slettvet.
