LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior defender Brie Kuhne headed in a corner kick four minutes into overtime to give the Rebels a 2-1 upset over 24th-ranked and previously undefeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the third game of the New Mexico Nike Classic on Sunday morning in women's collegiate soccer action. The victory improved the Rebels to 6-1-1, which ties for the best start in team history, and it was the Rebels' first over a ranked opponent this year, fourth in team history.
The Rebels got on the scoreboard first thanks to Brianna Moore's third goal of the year, as she slotted a shot that beat the keeper to the far post in the 24th minute. Ashleigh Shoughro and Amanda Forrester assisted on the goal, which put UNLV up 1-0.
UWM (6-1-1) came out on the attack in the second half, outshooting the Rebels 7-2, and converted on one of those shots in the 56th minute when Sarah Talbert scored on a cross from the left side. Kayle DeJardin and Louise Vraney were credited with assists on the goal. Neither team could come up with another score in the second half, sending it to overtime. This time, it was UNLV that came out firing, getting off three shots in the first five minutes. Kuhne the won the game for the Rebels with the golden goal, as she headed in a corner kick from Moore in the 95th minute.
The Panthers held a 12-9 edge on shots over UNLV, though the Rebels placed more on target, with six shots on goal to just four for UWM. Alicia Lugo made three saves in the net for UNLV, while Erin Kane posted four saves for the Panthers.
UNLV will finally return home for its next action after two straight weekends on the road, as it will host the UNLV Rebel Classic this coming weekend. On Friday, Sept. 19, UNLV will meet Robert Morris at 7 pm, and finish the tournament against Niagara on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 pm, will all the games behind held at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
