LAS VEGAS - The 39th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its 2009 season by blanking New Mexico State 7-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Playing a match that was postponed one day after a rare rainy Friday in Las Vegas, the Lady Rebels lost only two sets on the day.
The hosts earned the doubles point by sweeping the three courts. Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams won 8-3 at the top spot, Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun won 8-2 at No. 2 and Adrienn Hidvegi and Nikol Dimitrova teamed up to win 8-7 in a tiebreaker.
Nedeltcheva downed Sophia Marks 6-3, 6-2 at the top singles position and Dimitrova won in straight sets at No. 2. Williams rallied for a three-set victory on court three, Maskaljun won at No. 4, Hidvegi won at No. 5 and freshman Rumyana Terzieva made her collegiate dual-match debut a success with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 6.
"It's a good feeling to get back on the courts and competing as a team," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "New Mexico State is a solid program that is going to beat a lot of teams this year so to come out 7-0 gives us good momentum for tomorrow."
UNLV will play two matches on Sunday. The Lady Rebels host Pacific beginning at 9 a.m. and then take on Weber State at 1 p.m. Both of those matches will end when one team earns the clinching fourth point.
