BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Sustained winds, with gusts nearing 40 mph, caused havoc during Tuesday's second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, which is being played at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
A day after six teams and 31 individuals recorded totals of even-par or better under good scoring conditions, no team carded a round of par or better, and just five players posted totals of 72 or better. UNLV junior Therese Koelbaek nearly reached par, however, firing a 1-over 73 despite the tough playing conditions, including rolling in five birdies on the day.
Koelbaek climbed up the leaderboard and is now tied for 15th with a total of 147 (+3), helping the Rebels to a team score of 606 (296-310, +30), which has the team in 12th place heading into tomorrow's final round.
No. 22 Arizona has the lead after two rounds with a total of 2-over 578 (284-294), good for a one-stroke lead over Washington and four shots better than UC Davis. Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville and Sherlyn Popelka of Arizona share the individual lead with a 6-under 138, three shots in front of Kelli Shean of Arkansas.
"Conditions were extremely tough out there, with cold temperatures mixed with high winds," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "Despite that, Therese played a great round today. Tomorrow we need to be extremely patient. Anything can happen when conditions are this tough."
UNLV junior Alejandra Guacaneme, who shot an opening-round 72 (E), was hampered by the wind today, shooting a 9-over 81 and she is currently tied for 57th with a total of 153 (+9). Natasha Krishna (77-77--154, +10) is tied for 63rd, Ellis Keenan (73-82--155, +11) is tied for 66th and Kristen Schelling (77-79--156, +12) is tied for 71st.
The second team that UNLV fielded in the tournament is being led by sophomore Bethany Glassford, who turned in another solid effort on the course, shooting a 2-over 74 after opening with a 1-over 73 on Monday. Glassford is with Koelbaek in a group that is tied for 15th with a 147 (+3), and overall the Rebel `B' team is in 18th place with a score of 45-over 621 (306-315). Mandi Incorvaia (77-75--152, +8) is tied for 48th, Stephanie Whatley (76-81--157, +13) is tied for 75th, and Melissa Mabanta (82-85--167, +23) and Victoria Oros (80-87--167, +23) are in a group that is tied for 89th.
The Rebels are part of a 17-team field that features three teams in Golfweek's top 25 rankings in No. 14 Florida, No. 19 Louisville and No. 22 Arizona. The rest of the field includes Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Idaho, Kent State, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern, TCU, Texas Tech, UC Davis and Washington.
