BOULDER CITY, Nev. - UNLV women's golf closed out its fall schedule with a top-10 finish Wednesday at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, as players battled windy conditions for the second consecutive day at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
The Rebels came in 10th place with a team total of 911 (296-310-305, +47) over the three days on the par-72, 6,233-yard course, which played considerably tougher during rounds two and three with wind gusts of up to 40 mph and cool temperatures. Arizona left the tournament with a pair of trophies, winning the team title with a score of 878 (284-294-300, +14) along with Sherlyn Popelka taking home medalist honors with a 7-under 209 (69-69-71). She was the only player in the tournament to fire sub-par rounds in all three rounds.
UNLV junior Therese Koelbaek paced her team, recording a total of 223 (74-73-76, +7) and she was part of a trio of golfers that finished tied for 14th. Koelbaek had three birdies in her round today, and it marked the fourth time in five fall tournaments that she ended up in the top-20.
"I felt like we played much stronger today despite the conditions once again being very tough," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "Therese had a good tournament. We are ready to work hard over the winter break and be ready for a great spring."
Alejandra Guacaneme was next on the leaderboard for the Rebels, shooting a final-round 75 (+3) for a three-round total of 228 (+12) which had her in a group that tied for 36th. Natasha Krishna (77-77-76--230, +14) tied for 48th, Kristen Schelling (77-79-78--234, +18) tied for 63 rd and Ellis Keenan (73-82-82--237, +21) tied for 78th.
UNLV fielded a second team in the tournament and that group was led by sophomore Bethany Glassford, who finished with a three-round total of 233 (73-74-86, +17) and tied for 60th. She helped the Rebel `B' team to an 18th-place finish with a total of 956 (306-315-335, +92). Mandi Incorvaia (77-75-83--235, +19) tied for 69th, Stephanie Whatley (76-81-85--242, +26) tied for 85th, Melissa Mabanta (82-85-81--248, +32) finished 89th and Victoria Oros (80-87-89--256, +40) finished 91st.
The Rebels were part of a 17-team field that featured three teams in Golfweek's top-25 rankings in No. 14 Florida, No. 19 Louisville and No. 22 Arizona. The rest of the field included Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Idaho, Kent State, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern, TCU, Texas Tech, UC Davis and Washington.
UNLV will now have the rest of the year off and the Rebels' first tournament of 2010 is the Wildcat Invitational, which will be Feb. 22-23 at Tucson, Ariz.
