The UNLV softball schedule was announced today by the athletics department. The Rebels have 53 games scheduled and will take part in seven tournaments, three of which they will host. Three of the four road tournaments will be played in the state of California, while the seventh will take place in Utah. In all, the schedule is loaded with 15 squads that made the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Five of those 15 played in the super regionals with two (Michigan and Arizona State) earning trips to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
UNLV will start the season with back-to-back home tournaments. It all begins in Las Vegas with the Sportco Kick-Off Classic on Feb. 12-14 at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels welcome Illinois, Cal State Bakersfield, UC Davis, Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State to town.
The Rebels stay home for its annual Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Feb. 18-21, which will be held at Eller Media Stadium and Stephanie Lynn Craig Park. The Louisville will have a total of 16 teams participating in the four-day event.
After playing 10 games at home to begin the season, UNLV will hit the road for its sixth trip to the Cathedral City Classic (Feb. 25-28). The Rebels are one of 30 teams making their way to Cathedral City, Calif., which is near Palm Springs. They will face the likes of Cal Poly, Texas A&M, Fordham, Stanford and Long Island.
UNLV returns home for its final home tournament, the Eller Media Stadium Classic, on March 5-7. California, New Mexico State, Portland State, Southern Utah and Weber State join UNLV in the six team field.
Prior to embarking on consecutive trips to California, UNLV will host Southern Utah in a doubleheader on March 10. Following the SUU double dip, the Rebels become road warriors with their next 15 games played away from the friendly confines of Eller Media Stadium. The team will make three straight trips to the Golden State with stops at the Long Beach State Invitational (March 12-14), Cal State Fullerton's Judi Garman Classic (March 17-21) and a single contest at Loyola Marymount (March 26) followed by a doubleheader at UCLA (March 27).
The team stays on the road for three at the BYU Round Robin (April 2-3) to be held in St. George, Utah. UNLV will play a pair against Idaho State and one vs. Cal State Bakersfield.
The Rebels return home for five straight contests spread out over a 12-day stretch. The first four games of the quintet are against Mountain West Conference foes. Colorado State kicks off league play with a game on April 9 followed immediately by two single games against New Mexico on April 10 and 11. San Diego State comes to town on April 17 to wrap up the first two weeks of conference action. UMKC (Missouri-Kansas City) closes out the five-game set on April 20.
After the five at home, the team turns around and plays five on the road with trips to BYU (April 22), Utah (April 23 and 24) and San Diego State (May 1 and 2).
