LAS VEGAS - Bradley (2-3) rode its three-point shooting to open up a 23-point halftime lead and shot 58% for the game to hand UNLV (2-4) an 83-66 loss in the consolation game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up on Sunday afternoon in the Cox Pavilion.
The Lady Rebels led just once at 1-0 on Markiell Styles' free throw one minute into the game. Bradley quickly took away the lead on a three-pointer 13 seconds later from Katie Yohn, which started a 12-2 spurt, Yohn scored eight points during the run, putting Bradley up 12-3. The lead was 12-6 in favor for the Braves when they took control of the game with nine unanswered points, part of a 15-3 run over a five-minute stretch. Another Yohn trey capped the run, making the score 27-9 with 8:32 to play in the first half.
UNLV closed to within 14 points with just under four minutes to play, 33-19 on a layup from Mia Bell. Bradley closed the half hitting four more three-pointers, and went into halftime leading 47-24. The Braves hit 9-of-15 from three-point range in the first half for 60%, with five treys from Yohn and three from Brooke Bisping. UNLV meanwhile made just one from three-point range in the opening stanza, and connected on 28% of its attempts from the floor while allowing Bradley to shoot 58%.
Five points for Bradley to begin the second half pushed the lead to 29, its largest of the game. The advantage for the visitors would remain over 20 for almost the entire second half until the final two minutes, when UNLV scored 11 of the game's final 14 points to make the final score an 83-68 decision.
Styles led UNLV with a career-high tying 12 points and six rebounds, while Kelli Thompson added 11 points. Bell and Amanda Anderson both added nine points as well for the Lady Rebels, who shot 32.8% (21-of-64) from the floor for the afternoon, make 8-of-25 from behind the arc for 32%, and was 18-of-34 at the line for 52.9%. UNLV was outrebounded by a 48-27 margin, but did force 35 turnovers in the game, leading to 26 points.
Yohn finished the day hitting six three-pointers on the way to a game-high 25 points. Bisping also was in double-figures with 17. The Braves finished the day 29-of-50 from the floor for 58%, made 11-of-21 from three-point land for 52.4%, and was 14-of-21 at the free throw lone for 66.7%.
Next up for UNLV is a stretch of three straight games on the road, beginning with Thursday's 5 pm contest at the University of San Diego.
