LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Jamie Smith posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Kelli Thompson came off the bench to score a game-high 13 points as UNLV posted a 67-42 victory at Cal State Los Angeles in women's college basketball exhibition action on Thursday night at the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles scored the game's first four points, as the game was three minutes old before UNLV recorded its first basket, a jumper from Sandrine Nzeukou. Eight straight points from Thompson helped the Lady Rebels take a 14-9 edge with 11:04 left in the first half. With the score 21-15 in favor of UNLV with 6:35 on the clock, three straight transition layups from India Chaney, Erica Helms and Smith started a 12-0 spurt for UNLV. A jumper from Smith capped the run, making the lead 35-15 with 3:45 left in the opening 20 minutes, and UNLV would take a 37-17 lead into halftime.
UNLV came out firing on offense in the second half, scoring 17 points in the first seven minutes while opening up a 56-28 lead. CSU-LA made a small run, closing to within 23 points, 56-33. Back-to-back treys from Kalie Scanlon and Smith, followed by a jumper from Mia Bell, pushed the UNLV edge to 31, its largest of the game, at 64-33 with 7:50 left in the game.
Other scoring leaders from the Lady Rebels included Bell with nine points, Nezukou and Chaney with eight, and Helms with seven. Nzeukou also posted nine rebounds. UNLV shot 36.8% for the game and made 35.3% from behind the three-point line. UNLV held a 50-43 edge on the boards, and forced 20 turnovers while coming up with eight steals.
Jazzi Johnson paced the Golden Eagles with 10 points, and Jameiz Terrell was next with nine. CSU-LA was held to 29.5% shooting for the game, including just 18.2% from three-point range.
UNLV will play another exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 9, in Las Vegas against San Francisco State at 7 pm in the Cox Pavilion. The regular season will tipoff for the Lady Rebels on Friday, Nov. 13, at Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, with a 6 pm (PST) start.
