Rebels Tied For 11th In Hawaii

WAHIAWA, Hawaii - The No. 21 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 1-under-par 287 on Wednesday during the first round of the 33rd Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate played at Leilehua Golf Course (par 72, 6,917 yards) and is tied for 11th place, 11 shots back of the of the lead.

Arizona shot a 12-under 276 to take the team lead after the first round of play, while New Mexico is just one shot back at 11-under. Arkansas is third at 8-under, followed by BYU in fourth at 7-under and Auburn in fifth at 5-under. Nevada, Reno is sixth at 4-under, SMU and UC Santa Barbara are both tied for seventh at 3-under, while Texas A&M and Colorado State are tied for ninth at 2-under.

The Rebels are tied with San Diego for 11th. The field is comprised of 17 teams.

Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus leads the field after an 8-under 64. San Jose State's Jay Myers and BYU's Jordan Hammer, who is competing as an individual, are tied for second, two shots back at 6-under.

UNLV was led by juniors Eddie Olson and Brett Kanda, who both shot 1-under 71 and are in a seven-way tie for 32nd, seven shots off the pace.

Other UNLV scores and places: freshman Derek Ernst (E, 72, T39th), freshman Colby Smith (+1, 73, T45th), sophomore Ji Moon (+5, 77, T82nd) and junior Johnny Pinjuv (+11, 83, T94th), who is competing as an individual.

The tournament will continue with on Thursday and conclude on Friday with 18 holes each day.
