UNLV's Offense Awakes After Stretch

Feb. 21, 2009

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior outfielder Scott Berke hit a three-run double to start a big seventh inning and the Rebels came back to beat Maine 9-5 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

After falling behind by two runs in the top half of the frame, UNLV rallied with six runs in the bottom of the seventh, collecting five hits, including a pair of doubles that scored five of the six runs. Berke finished with three hits and two runs scored to go along with his three RBI as he helped the Rebels move to 2-0 on the year while Maine dropped to 0-2.

Matt Hutchison worked 4.1 innings of relief to earn the win, giving up two runs, one earned, while striking out two and walking three. Justin Latta took the loss as he allowed the first three batters he faced in the seventh inning to reach, setting the Rebels up for their big inning.

As they did in the opener last night the Rebels scored first, plating three runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab the early lead. Bryan Resnick was hit by a pitch and Scott Berke singled, bringing Rance Roundy to the plate, who drove them both home with a triple to left field, making it 2-0. Roundy then scored on a ground out by Jesse Wight to push the margin to 3-0.

The Black Bears, who loaded the bases in the third inning but could not get a run, got to Rebel starter Andrew Beresford in the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs to pull within one at 3-2. Maine loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks and then Kyle Stilphen hit a sacrifice fly for one run and then another run would come across on a wild pitch. UM loaded the bases again in the fifth inning, pushing another run across the plate and chasing Beresford, who left with two outs in the frame.

Maine would move out in front in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs for their first lead of the season, but that would be short lived as the Rebels rallied after the stretch. Roundy and Drew Beuerlein each drove in a pair of runs for UNLV, which finished with 10 hits and a pair of errors.

UNLV and Maine will play the second game of their doubleheader tonight at 6:00 p.m. (PT) and then the Rebels and Black Bears close out their series tomorrow afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, with the first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
