LAS VEGAS - San Diego State forced 27 turnovers and hit a season-high tying 10 three-pointers to hand UNLV an 83-58 loss on Wednesday night Mountain West Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night from the Cox Arena. The loss sends UNLV to 9-12 overall, 2-6 in the conference, while SDSU improved to 15-5 and have sole possession of second place in the MWC at 6-2.
The Aztecs opened the game on a 12-4 run over the first two minutes, which included seven points from Jennifer Layton-Bailers. Following a three-pointer from Dominique Harris, SDSU's Jene Morris hit a three-pointer and a layup to extend the lead for the Aztecs to 17-6 just under four minutes into the game. The lead then remained between 9-12 points for the next nine minutes, before a four straight points from UNLV made the score 25-17 with 6:56 left in the half. However, UNLV's leading scorer Shamela Hampton went to the bench with two fouls and didn't come back the rest of the half, and SDSU would take advantage with a 13-2 spurt. A three-pointer from Jerica Williams ended the run, making the score 38-19 with 4:12 to go in the half.
After leading 39-24 at halftime, SDSU opened the second half on a 9-2 run. That was helped by an 11-minute field goal drought, during with UNLV made seven free throws but missed seven straight shots from the floor.
SDSU lead by 21, 55-34, before six straight points, off three free throws and a Harris trey, brought UNLV within 15 with 8:32 to play. That was the closest UNLV had been in the second half, but the Aztecs responded by hitting back-to-back three-pointers, and would close out for the 25-point victory.
Hampton led the Lady Rebels with 17 points, while Jamie Smith added 10 poitns and Erica Helms came off the bench with nine. UNLV shot 40.5% (15-of-37) for the game, and was 27-of-36 at the free throw line for 75%. However, they made a season-low one three-pointer (1-of-7), and the 27 turnovers tied a season-high.
The Aztecs were paced by Morris with 19 points. Layton-Bailes posted 15 points, and Quenese Davis added 13. SDSU shot 50% (30-of-60) for the game, made 10-of-17 from three-point range (58.8%), and held a 32-11 edge on points off turnovers.
UNLV will begin the second half of league play on Saturday, Feb. 7, as it hosts New Mexico at 3 pm in the Cox Pavilion.
