LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's tennis team swept doubles play but could not earn enough points in singles to complete the upset of No. 44 Virginia Commonwealth, falling 4-3 on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels dropped to 7-6 overall while the Rams improved to 12-6.
The hosts earned the doubles point by sweeping the three courts. Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams won 8-2 at the top spot, Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun won 8-5 at No. 2 and Rumyana Terzieva and Nikol Dimitrova teamed up to win 8-3 on court two.
In singles play, top Lady Rebel Nedeltcheva upset No. 122-ranked Ana Bara 6-4, 6-0. UNLV also picked up a win at the bottom of the lineup when Terzieva got by Mihaela Bunea 7-6, 6-3. VCU, however, won all remaining four matches, including taking two three-setters, to clinch the hard-fought victory.
