LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's tennis team finished a long homestand in style by defeating Oklahoma 6-1 on a sunny and warm Tuesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 9-6 overall and 9-3 at home the season (3-3 on the homestand) while the Sooners fell to 6-7.
UNLV won a spirited doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead. Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams won 8-6 at the top spot and Nikol Dimitrova and Rumyana Terzieva teamed up to win by the same score on court three to clinch it.
In singles play, Nedeltcehva, ranked 123rd in the nation, improved her record to 15-7 with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) super-tiebreaker victory over Ana-Maria Constantinescu.
That match concluded after four Lady Rebels earned their points in straight sets: Williams won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 position, Adrienn Hidvegi upped her team-leading singles mark to 17-5 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4, Terzieva won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5, and Alisa Razina breezed 6-1, 6-0 on court six.
"This may have been our best team effort so far this year," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "It was great to see the team step up and beat a very good Oklahoma team. It's exactly what we wanted to heading into conference play."
UNLV is off until opening Mountain West Conference play vs. New Mexico in a neutral-site match in San Diego on March 27.
