SAN DIEGO - The 71st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its Mountain West Conference schedule with a 4-3 neutral-site victory over New Mexico on the campus of San Diego State Friday.
The Lady Rebels improved to 10-6 after staging their sixth consecutive victory over the Lobos, who fell to 5-10 on the year.
UNLV came out firing in doubles play and took a 1-0 lead after sweeping three matches. Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams combined for an 8-4 victory at the top spot to improve their record to 17-5 this season. Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun won 8-6 at the No. 2 spot while Nikol Dimitrova and Rumyana Terzieva won 8-5 on court three.
In singles, UNLV built a big lead with a trio of straight-set victories. Freshman Rumyana Terzieva won 6-2, 6-1 over Ashley Bonner at the fifth spot, Hidvegi got her team-leading 18th win, 6-3, 6-2 over Victoria Tessmar at No. 4 and Dimitrova clinched it with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Mackenzie White on court two. UNM got a win at No. 6 and then won both three-setters to make the final score 4-3.
"It's always nice to start out conference play with a victory, especially against a rival of ours," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "We played really well in doubles and did enough in singles to get to the four points that we needed."
Next up, UNLV takes on No. 32 TCU in San Diego starting with doubles play at 11 a.m.
