LAS VEGAS - The 69th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team got back into the victory column by fighting off non-conference rival Nevada, Reno 4-3 on a beautiful Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 7-4 overall and 7-1 at home the season while the Wolf Pack fell to 1-4.
UNLV won a spirited doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead. Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams won 8-6 at the top spot and Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun won 9-7 on court two.
In singles play, the hosts won the first set on five of six courts but ultimately split. Scoring for UNLV was Rumyana Terzieva, 6-0, 6-3 over Caroline Stevens at No. 6, Adrienn Hidvegai, 6-4, 6-1 over Aodhnait Lombard at No. 5 and then senior Willams, who clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Lais Ogata on court three.
"Today was very competitive with our in-state rivals," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "It was nice to pull out doubles and the girls stepped up against a good opponent to get us to the four points needed."
Next up for UNLV is a home match vs. South Carolina on Wednesday starting with doubles at 2 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
