BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Wind gusts of near 30 m.p.h. wreaked havoc with scores all day as play got underway at the UNLV Spring Invitational at the Boulder Creek Golf Club on Monday, where the Rebels are currently tied for fourth.
Just one player shot below par on the day on the par-72 course, which is a stark contrast to last fall when the NCAA records for lowest team tournament score to par and lowest individual score to par was set. The Rebels have a team score of 312 (+24), which is six strokes off the pace set by Tulsa and Texas Tech, who share the first-round lead with scores of 306 (+18). Oregon is next with a 311 (+23), followed by UNLV and Georgia.
Marta Silva of Georgia negotiated the winds well enough to post an opening-round 70 (-2), the only sub-par round of the day, and she has a four-stroke lead over Ulrika van Niekerk of Texas Tech. She leads a field of 96 players from 17 different teams that are taking part in the three-day tournament that continues Tuesday and ends on Wednesday.
UNLV fielded two teams at its second home tournament of the season and the first team is being paced by sophomore Alejandra Guacaneme, who shot a three-over 75 and is in a group that is tied for third. Guacaneme was four over before ending her round with a birdie on the final hole, which for her today was the par-5 ninth.
Natasha Krishna is just outside of the top 10, sitting tied for 11th after shooting a 77 (+5) which saw her close her round with back-to-back birdies, giving her some momentum heading into tomorrow's second round. Kristen Schelling (79, +7) is tied for 25th, Therese Koelbaek (81, +9) is tied for 39th and Bethany Glassford (82, +10) is tied for 48th.
The UNLV `B' team is in 14th place following the first round with a team score of 326 (+38) and that squad is being led by Stephanie Whatley, who is tied for 32nd with a score of 80 (+8), while Melissa Mabanta is a shot behind and tied for 39th. Nicole McGirr (82, +10) is tied for 48th, Kasi Lee (83, +11) is tied for 63rd and Victoria Oros (92, +20) is in 96th.
