Clausen Leads Scarlet To 17-0 Win

April 17, 2009

LAS VEGAS - Sophomore quarterback Mike Clausen led the Scarlet Team to all three of its scoring drives in a 17-0 victory over the Gray Team on a beautiful night at Sam Boyd Stadium in the Rebels' annual Spring Game Friday.

Clausen (Riverside, CA/North HS) will again be the team's No. 2 quarterback behind junior Omar Clayton (Normal, IL/Normal Community HS) this fall but looked like an even better version of the man who started three games and won two of them in 2008. He completed 10-14 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns, including a 48-yarder to Jerriman Robinson.

Clayton, who missed the final three games of his sophomore season with a knee injury, got less reps but still completed 4-7 attempts for 73 yards. Both signal callers played for the Scarlet, which was made up of the No. 1 offense and defense (a handful of players competed for both sides).

Gray QB Les Obie (Huntington Beach, CA/Golden West College), who impressed coaches and onlookers this spring in his attempt to earn the No. 3 spot on the depth chart, hit 8-16 attempts for 62 yards but could not get his side into the end zone vs. the UNLV starting unit.

Clausen opened the scoring with a 13-yard pass to senior Rodelin Anthony (Immokalee, FL/Immokalee HS), who led all receivers with four grabs. Kyle Watson hit a 40-yard field goal to make the score 10-0 at halftime.

Scarlet senior defensive back Marquel Martin (Rialto, CA/Rialto HS) led all defenders with five total tackles in a largely well-played game that saw no turnovers and just a few penalties.

"This was a good effort out here on a great night for football," said UNLV head coach Mike Sanford. "Mike Clausen played well tonight and showed that we have the best quarterback situation during my time here. Omar Clayton is No. 1 and Mike is like No. 1-A. He has started games for us and does not perform like a No. 2 quarterback so we're real pleased to be where we are with that position."

The game was the final of 15 spring sessions over six weeks in what is Sanford's fifth year leading the program. Along with a nice contingent of vocal fans in the stands, at least 75 UNLV football lettermen attended a social event inside the stadium's Club Level.

UNLV opens the 2009 season on Sept. 5 when it hosts Sacramento State.
