First-Place UNLV Downs CSU 7-0

April 5, 2009

COLORADO SPRINGS - The 46th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team stands all alone in first place in the Mountain West Conference after downing Colorado State in a closer-than-it-sounds 7-0 final on Sunday at the Air Force Academy's indoor courts.

The Lady Rebels improved to 15-6 and 6-0 in the league while the Rams fell to 5-10 and 0-4. After the weekend's results, No. 28 TCU and No. 57 BYU are tied for second place behind UNLV at 4-1.

The Lady Rebels began the afternoon by taking all three doubles points for a 1-0 advantage. Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams won 8-1 at the top spot, Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun won 8-5 at No. 2 and Nikol Dimitrova and Rumyana Terzieva won by the same score on court three.

With only four courts available for singles play inside Cadet Gymnasium, UNLV grinded out four three-set victories and then a pair of pro-set wins at the bottom of the lineup.

Nedeltcheva, ranked 125th in the nation, survived against Laura Neal 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 to give the junior her 20th singles win of the season. Dimitrova rallied past Lauren Strasburger at No. 2, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3; Williams fought off Tori Ameson 6-1 5-7, 6-1 at No. 3; Adrienn Hidvegi came back to down Greer Satherlie 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4; Maskaljun downed Kirsten Stople 8-5 at No. 5; and Terzieva made quick work of Caitlin Fluegge, 8-2, on court six.

"This was a tough weekend playing indoors at high altitude but we did what we needed to do to come home with three big conference victories," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory, who won his 50th career MWC regular-season match on Sunday. "Now we have a lot to look forward to during our last league weekend later this month."

UNLV will return home for its final three matches of the regular season. The Lady Rebels host Southern Utah this Friday beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. and then face off with No. 44 Utah on April 17 and BYU for Senior Day 2009 on April 18.
