LAS VEGAS - An impressive total of nine non-conference teams that were ranked at the end of last season appear on the UNLV women's tennis 2009-10 schedule, which the school officially released Thursday.
"Once again we've set ourselves up to face an excellent national schedule," UNLV 11th-year head coach Kevin Cory said. "We'll compete against some of the top programs in the country and it's shaping up to be another outstanding year here."
After participating in a trio of individual tournaments in the fall, including a first-ever women's ITA regional event across town at the Darling Tennis Center, the team hosts the annual Freeman Memorial Invitational on Jan. 15-17, 2010. A collection of singles and doubles players from top programs Stanford, Florida, USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Fresno State, Baylor, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Oregon are scheduled to battle UNLV's contingent.
The dual-match campaign gets underway by hosting New Mexico State on January 22. After the opening weekend, the Lady Rebels, who finished last season ranked 43rd, will travel to Los Angeles for the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament. The second-year, 64-team event will have host sites around the nation and UNLV will be paired first with host UCLA (ranked 12th last season) and then against either Tulsa (36th) or Pepperdine (41st).
Other non-conference highlights include visits to the Fertitta Tennis Complex by Fresno State (16th) on Feb. 19, San Diego (60th) on Feb. 20, Texas A&M (38th) on Feb. 21, Denver (39th) on Feb. 26, Pepperdine on Feb. 28, UC Irvine (57th) on March 26 and Boise State (34th) on March 28.
The defending Mountain West Conference regular-season champion Lady Rebels will open league play with a match vs. San Diego State on March 24. Marking its only action outside of the Pacific Time Zone, UNLV next heads to the Beehive state to play Utah on March 31 and BYU on April 2. Back home, the squad will host New Mexico on April 9 and TCU on Senior Day April 10. The regular season will then close with a trip to San Diego to play Colorado State, Wyoming and Air Force.
For the first time in a decade since hosting - and winning - the inaugural MWC Championship, UNLV will be the site of the league's showcase from April 28-May 1. The NCAA regionals are scheduled for May 14-16 and the round of 16 and individual national tournaments will take place in Athens, Ga., from May 20-31.
