Rebels Headed To Preview

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf team, ranked No. 13 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll, will be back in action Sunday-Monday, Sept. 27-28, at the PING/Golfweek Preview, which will be held at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

The tournament, which will be played at the 7,152-yard, par 72 Olympic Course, will include five of Golfweek's preseason top-10 teams and 11 of the top 30. The field includes (Golfweek preseason ranking in parenthesis) Oklahoma State (2), Washington (3), Texas A&M (4), Arizona State (5), Alabama (9), LSU (12), TCU (14), USC (16), Colorado State (23), North Carolina State (26), UNLV (29), Chattanooga, Kent State, Indiana and New Mexico.

The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of two rounds (36 holes) on Sunday, while the final round (18 holes) will be played on Monday.

Scheduled to compete for UNLV will be seniors Brett Kanda and Eddie Olson, sophomores Derek Ernst and Colby Smith, and freshman Kevin Penner. UNLV did not compete at the Preview last season. The last time the Rebels did play in the event was in 2007 when it was held in West Lafayette, Ind. UNLV finished 10th in the event.

UNLV opened the fall season by winning the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., then finished third at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. Ernst and Smith both tied for individual medalist honors at the Tucker Invitational.
