BREMERTON, Wash. - The No. 13 UNLV men's golf team shot 17-over 305 during Monday's final round and finished tied for eighth at the PING/Golfweek Preview, which was played at the 7,061-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
The Rebels finished the 54-hole tournament with a total score of 39-over 903. Oklahoma State captured the team title with a 2-under 862, after shooting 3-under 285 during the final round. Washington finished second, 22 shots back at 20-over 884. Arizona State was third at 25-over, North Carolina State was fourth at 29-over and Texas A&M finished fifth at 31-over. New Mexico was sixth at 32-over and USC finished seventh at 33-over. TCU was the other team tied for eighth.
Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein was the individual medalist, winning by two shots at 5-under 211. He shot a final-round 1-under 71. Two of his teammates finished second and third, respectively. Morgan Hoffmann was second at 3-under, while Trent Whitekiller was even-par 216.
UNLV was led individually by sophomore Derek Ernst, who tied for 12th at 6-over 222. Ernst shot even-par 72 during the final round.
Other Rebel players: sophomore Colby Smith (75) tied for 27th at 9-over, senior Eddie Olson (81) tied for 43rd at 14-over, senior Brett Kanda (77) tied for 61st at 18-over and freshman Kevin Penner (82) finished 74th at 30-over.
The tournament featured 15 teams and 75 individuals. UNLV will return to action Oct. 12-13, at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be played at the Old Overton Club in Birmingham, Ala.
