SAN DIEGO - San Diego State blew the game open with a 27-2 run to end the first half on the way to a 70-41 victory over UNLV in Mountain West Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night from Viejas Arena. UNLV's record dropped to 7-10 overall, 0-3 in the league following the loss, while SDSU improved to 11-4 and 3-0 in the MWC.
UNLV held a 4-2 lead two minutes into the game thanks to back-to-back baskets from Sandrine Nzeukou. San Diego State then countered with a 13-0 run over the next 4:35, opening up a 15-4 edge at the 13:01 mark of the first. India Chaney and Allison Holiday kept UNLV within reach by combining for 11 of the game's next 13 points, with Holiday's jumper at the 9:08 mark making the score 17-13.
After a pair of Erica Helms' free throws brought UNLV within seven, 22-15, three straight SDSU three-pointers started a 27-2 run over the final seven minutes of the half. The Aztec's Jene Morris scored 14 of her 16 first half points during that seven-minute stretch, and SDSU would finish the first half shooting 59.4% (19-of-32) to UNLV's 20% (6-of-30).
The second half was an even affair, with UNLV eventually outscoring the Aztecs 24-21. The lowest UNLV cut into the lead was 26 points twice, the last at 55-29.
Nzeukou led UNLV in scoring with 10 points and five rebounds, while the next highest scorer was Chaney with eight. Kelli Thompson added six points and a career-high eight rebounds. UNLV shot a season-low 26.9% (14-of-52) from the floor, made 1-of-12 from three-point range for 8.3%, and was 12-of-16 at the free throw line for 75%. The Lady Rebs were also outrebounded by a 43-28 margin.
Morris paced the Aztecs with 18 points and six assists. Jessika Bradley posted 13 points and Coco Davis chipped in 10. As a team, SDSU shot 47.5% (28-of-59) from the floor, was 5-of-16 from downtown for 31.3%, and 9-of-11 at the free throw line (81.8%).
UNLV will play a second straight road game on Saturday, when it faces Utah in Salt Lake City with a 2 pm (PST) tipoff.
