LAS VEGAS - With top singles and doubles player Kristina Nedeltcheva sitting out the tournament with an injury, UNLV's contingent had a tough first day at the eighth annual Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

All four Lady Rebels in Flight One lost their first round singles match. The hosts' only top-flight win came in consolation play when fourth-seeded and 44th-ranked Jana Albers downed Oregon's Pavlina Smatova 6-4, 6-3.

UNLV split a pair of Flight One doubles matches. Winning for the Lady Rebels was the team of Anna Maskaljun and Alisa Razina, which got by Carolyn McVeigh and Veronica Li of Stanford 8-5 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.

Players from eight of the elite college programs in the United States have gathered on campus for what is one of the game's top individual tournaments each season. Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free.
