LOS ANGELES - The 41st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season, 4-0, at the hands of No. 12 UCLA in the first round of the second annual ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament Friday.
Playing at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, the Bruins won the first four completed matches to improve to 2-0 while the Lady Rebels fell to 3-1.
The hosts won the first two completed doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The match on court two was then halted with the score tied at 6.
The bad news in singles was that UCLA players won three consecutive straight-set matches in dominating fashion to clinch it. The good news was that two UNLV players were nearing victory in the middle of the lineup.
Freshman Nives Pavlovic was ahead 6-4, 3-2 over Noelle Hickey at the third position and junior Adrienn Hidvegi was leading Maya Johansson 6-2, 3-2 on court four when play was stopped. The top of the lineup also featured a competitive match as fifth-ranked Yasmin Schnack was leading 7-5, 3-1 over No. 50 Kristina Nedeltcheva.
The Lady Rebels will play the second and final round at the event Saturday night vs. No. 40 Pepperdine. The Waves were defeated 4-1 by No. 36 Tulsa in the other side of the bracket.
