VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team is tied for fourth place at 12-over-par 572 after the first day of play at the 12-team Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which was played at Old Overton Golf Club (par 70, 7,204 yards) on Monday.
The Rebels' first-round score was 1-under 279, while their second-round total was 13-over 293. UNLV is tied with South Alabama, and both trail team-leader Florida by 18 shots heading into Tuesday's final round. The Gators shot 2-under 278 and 4-under 276 for a 36-hole total of 6-under 554 and a two shot lead over Auburn. The Tigers are at 4-under 556, while host Alabama is third at 1-under.
Auburn's Niclas Carlsson fired an opening-round 6-under 64 and followed that up with a 2-under 68 to take a one-shot individual lead at 8-under 132. Alabama's Bobby Wyatt is second at 7-under, while Florida's Tyler McCumber is third at 5-under.
UNLV freshman Blake Biddle and junior Derek Ernst are both in the top 10 individually for the Rebels. Biddle shot two rounds of even-par 70 and is in a four-way tie for sixth place, eight shots off the lead, while Ernst fired a 4-under 66, then a 5-over 75 and is in a two-way tie for 10th at 1-over 141.
Other Rebels: senior Jeremiah Wooding is tied for 16th at 3-over 143 (68-75), sophomore Kevin Penner is tied for 40th at 10-over 150 (77-73) and freshman Nicholas Maruri is tied for 48th at 12-over 152 (75-77). There are 60 individuals in the field.
