VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team finished in fifth place after a final-round 14-over-par 294 on Tuesday at the 12-team Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which was played at Old Overton Golf Club (par 70, 7,204 yards).
The Rebels 54-hole total was 26-over 866. Auburn shot the lowest score of the final round with a 7-under 273 to capture the team title at 11-under 829. The Tigers finished seven shots better than second-place Florida, which finished at 4-under 836. Host Alabama was third at 2-under, followed by South Alabama in fourth at 19-over.
Auburn's Niclas Carlsson shot even-par 70 for the final round and hung on for medalist honors at 8-under 202. Alabama's Bobby Wyatt finished two shots back at 6-under in second place.
UNLV junior Derek Ernst was the top individual finisher for the Rebels with a tie for 10th place at 2-over 212. Ernst shot a final-round 1-over 71. UNLV freshman Blake Biddle tied for 21st at 7-over 217 after a final-round 77.
Other Rebels: senior Jeremiah Wooding tied for 26th at 9-over 219 after a final-round 76, sophomore Kevin Penner tied for 28th at 10-over 220 after a final-round 70 and freshman Nicholas Maruri tied for 55th at 24-over 234 after a final-round 82. There were 60 individuals in the field.
UNLV will be back in action Oct. 25-26, at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.
