Second Round Tee Times l First Round Results l Live Scoring
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team opened up first-round action at the UNLV Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, finishing 8-over par and just two shots out of second place.
"The team took home course advantage today," said first-year head coach Amy Bush. "The conditions were tough and we are in the hunt with just two shots separating five teams."
The Rebels, ranked 36th entering the tournament, are just one shot back of defending team champion Arizona. The Wildcats are the highest ranked team in the field at No. 11 and one of 10 featured in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
No. 15 Arkansas holds a 17-shot lead, thanks in large part to Emily Tubert who set a course record and tied the NCAA record for best round in relation to par with a 9-under 63. No. 38 Washington is in second place at 6-over while No. 35 Louisville stands tied with Arizona.
Junior Kristen Schelling led the Rebels in the first round, finishing as the only UNLV golfer under par at 1-under. Fresh off a top-20 finish at the World Team Amateur Championship, Therese Koelbaek is one of 10 players knotted at 1-under par after the opening round.
"Kristen has been working very hard on her game over the last few weeks," added Bush. "She putted well today and I feel really good about her chances of keeping her play elevated for the remainder of the week."
Coming in behind Tubert's stellar opening round performance are Karinn Dickinson (Washington) and Kayla Mortellaro (Idaho), each of whom are tied at 4-under par.
Alejandra Guacaneme turned in a 3-over par 75 while Ellis Keenan finished with a 77 and Katerina Prorokova a 79 to round out the UNLV lineup. Several Rebels also competed on the individual side, including Bethany Glassford, who is tied with Koelbaek at 1-over par heading into the second round.
Second round action in Boulder City will kick off at 7:30 a.m. and continue into the afternoon.
