LAS CRUCES, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team is in third place, just three shots back, at 9-over-par 577 after the first day of play Monday at the 15-team Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, at New Mexico State University Golf Course (par 71, 6,999 yards).
The Rebels' first-round score was 5-over 289, while their second-round total was 4-over 288. Host New Mexico State leads the field at 6-over 574 after rounds of 8-under 276 and 14-over 298. Washington State is in second place, just one shot back (287-288--575). Idaho is fourth at 14-over, while Boise State and Kansas are both tied for fifth at 17-over.
New Mexico State's Timothy Madigan leads the field by two shots at 6-under after firing an opening-round 8-under 63, then a second-round 2-over 73. Idaho's Matt Rawitzer is second at 4-under. UNLV has three players in the top 12 individually, and was led by freshman Blake Biddle, who is tied for fourth at 1-under 141 after shooting even-par 71 and 1-under 70. Junior Derek Ernst is tied for sixth at even-par (71-71), while junior Colby Smith is tied for 12th at 2-over (71-73).
Madigan and Ernst each tied for medalist honors at last year's Wimberly Intercollegiate, while UNLV is the defending team champion.
Other Rebels: senior Jeremiah Wooding is tied for 35th at 8-over 150 (76-74) and freshman Karsten Majors is tied for 74th at 17-over 159 (82-77). There are 84 individuals in the field.
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. MT.
