LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Thanks to a strong defensive performance, UNLV improved to 2-0 on Friday night with a 66-48 victory over San Diego in women's collegiate basketball action from the Cox Pavilion. The Lady Rebels held a 28-11 edge on points off turnovers, and also outscored San Diego (1-1) 25-10 on second chance points, thanks to a 42-29 rebounding advantage.
Nine players scored in the game for the Lady Rebels, who held a 26-7 edge in points off the bench. That was mostly due to the play of India Chaney, who posted 11 points and added four rebounds and four steals in 18 minutes of action. Leading UNLV on the night was Kelli Thompson with 13 points, while Mia Bell added nine, all in the first half. Lenita Sanford recorded eight points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocks as well.
San Diego led just once, at 2-0. UNLV quickly answered with ten straight points and never looked back. USD did close to within four points at 10-6, and against at 15-10 on a tip-in from Morgan Woodrow with 11:40 to play in the first half. An 8-0 run by UNLV, started by a layup from Markiell Styles and capped by a Thompson three-pointer, pushed the host's lead to 23-10 with 9:57 on the clock. The Toreros were able to cut the deficit to single digits twice more, but came no closer then eight, and UNLV would take a 42-25 lead into halftime.
The lead grew to as high as 22, 55-33 at the 9:16 mark of the second half on a layup from Jamie Smith. San Diego made one last run, a 12-2 run to close within 57-45 on a Dominique Conners with 5:35 to play. UNLV responded with a 9-1 run of its own over the next four minutes, before a USD layup accounted for the final 18-point margin.
UNLV shot 39.6% (21-of-53) for the game, and was 21-of-27 at the free throw line, but made just 3-of-18 attempts from downtown for 16.7%. The Lady Rebels came up with 15 steals for the contest as well.
San Diego was paced by Conners' 14 points. Nya Mason was next with 12 points, and Woodrow posted eight points and seven rebounds. The Toreros were held to 37.3% shooting (19-of-51), made just 1-of-10 from three-point land for 10%, and were 9-of-18 at the free throw line (50%).
The Lady Rebels return to action on Sunday when they host Nevada, Reno at 2 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center.
