LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golfer Derek Ernst shot a final-round 5-under-par 66 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for sixth place at the 2010 Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, which was played at El Paso Country Club (par 71, 6,864 yards).
Ernst, a junior, climbed seven spots in the standings and finished six shots out of the lead with a 6-under 207. San Diego's Alex Ching won the tournament title by three shots at 12-under 201 after three consecutive rounds of 67. Georgia Tech's J.T. Griffin and Claremont Mudd Scripps' Tain Lee both tied for second at 9-under.
The field included the 2010 U.S. Amateur champion (Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State), the 2010 NCAA champion (Scott Langley of Illinois) and the defending event champion (Hunter Hamrick of Alabama). The tournament was advertised as having its deepest field ever.
This year's All-America Golf Classic was the 36th and had a field of 32 of the nation's premier collegiate golfers, including seven of the top 11 amateur golfers in the world, according to the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings. Each university that had a golfer compete in the tournament will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
UNLV's next team tournament will be in the spring at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz., Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
