LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV junior Chace Stanback was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, marking his first career honor and also the first for a UNLV player this season. Stanback shared this week's award with BYU's Jimmer Fredette.
Stanback, a 6-foot-8-inch guard/forward from Los Angeles, Calif., earned Tournament MVP honors after guiding the Runnin' Rebels to a perfect 3-0 record and the title at the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif., over the weekend. UNLV is now 6-0 on the season, which also matches last season's record after the first six games.
Stanback opened tournament play with game-high-tying 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field in an 80-71 win over Tulsa. He also had three rebounds and two assists against the Golden Hurricane. He followed that effort with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, in the Runnin' Rebels' 69-55 victory over Murray State in the semifinals, adding two rebounds and two assists.
Stanback then closed out the week with a team-high 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds in Sunday's 71-59 championship win over Virginia Tech. He also had and assist and a steal.
For the week, Stanback averaged 17.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game, while shooting 70 percent (21-of-30) from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and 80 percent from the free-throw line (4-of-5).
The Runnin' Rebels will travel to Normal, Ill., for their next game as they take on Illinois State on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. PST. The Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge game may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/98.9 FM.
