LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (1-1) rebounded nicely from an earlier defeat to Illinois with a 17-1, five-inning victory over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (0-1) Friday evening in the Sportco Kick-Off Classic from Eller Media Stadium. UNLV got on the board early and often, as they scored at least three runs in each frame. The Rebels recorded 14 hits, three of which were home runs. Stephanie Bregante (1-0) notched her first win of the season, as she flirted with a no-hit bid going into the top of the fifth only to have it spoiled by two Roadrunner hits.
UNLV struck for six runs in the first inning with help from four hits and two Roadrunner errors. The Rebels began the offensive by getting two of its first three runners on base before a throwing error allowed Tara Bendt, who singled for UNLV's first hit, to score the game's first run. Tayler Aleman followed the score by adding three more to the board with a three-run shot to left-center. After CSUB recorded the inning's second out, Laura Briones walked prior to Korin Cuico nailing a two-run homer to left to close out the six-run frame.
Erica Addison pushed UNLV's lead to 9-0 with a three-run home run in the second.
The Rebels used five hits and two errors to score five more runs in the third. Marissa Nichols, Jaci Hull, Aleman and Addison each had an RBI in the inning.
Nichols, Bendt and Kendall Fearn added three more RBI to the box score in the fourth inning to wrap up UNLV's 17-run effort on the night.
The Roadrunners notched their lone run in the top of the fifth with following a double from Stefanie Frei and an RBI-single from Chelsey Bell.
Bregante tossed 5.0 innings of two-hit, one-run ball for her first victory of 2010. She struck out two and walked two, as well.
Shawna Truan (0-1) took the loss for CSUB in 3.0 innings of work. Truan allowed 14 runs (11 earned) on 12 hits. She walked two and struck out one.
Katie Chavez spelled Truan in the circle for one-inning of relief. Chavez was touched for three runs on two hits. She walked two and struck out one.
The Rebels return to action Saturday afternoon (3:45 pm) against UC Davis in the second day of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic from Eller Media Stadium.
Note: The home runs by Addison, Aleman and Cuico were the first of their careers as Rebels.
