Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (2-1) never trailed in its 7-2 victory over the UC Davis Aggies (2-1) Saturday night from Eller Media Stadium during the second day of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. The Rebels snapped a 1-1 tie in the second inning with five runs aided by two Aggie errors. The win is the second straight for UNLV and third consecutive in the head-to-head series with UC Davis.
UNLV scored first with a single tally in the opening inning off an RBI-single from Tayler Aleman. Marissa Nichols crossed home plate on Aleman's hit after initially reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Nichols made her way around the base paths with help from another hit-by-pitch and a fielder's choice.
UC Davis evened things up with a score in the second. Sarah Axelson, who led off the inning with a double, tied the game following a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.
The Rebels took their second lead of the game with five runs in the bottom of the second with help from four hits and two Aggie errors. UNLV loaded the bases up to start the frame before Tara Bendt singled in the inning's first run. Two more runs came across when the Aggies were unable to get an out on a base-running mishap by UNLV. Following a walk to load the bases, Erica Addison singled through the left side for an RBI. UC Davis made some wholesale changes after Addison's hit, which included bringing Alex Holmes in as a relief pitcher. Holmes immediately plunked Korin Cuico to bring in the fifth score of the frame.
The Aggies answered back with one run in the third only to watch the Rebels match the score on an RBI-triple by Addison in the fourth.
Kylie Wagner (1-0) notched her first career victory in a Rebel uniform with a complete-game effort. Wagner allowed two runs on five hits, while walking one.
Dana Waldusky (1-1) was on the hook for the loss, as she surrendered six runs (one earned) on five hits in only 1.2 innings of work. Waldusky struck out three and walked one.
Holmes pitched the final 4.1 innings in relief of Waldusky. She gave up one unearned run on two hits. She fanned two and walked two.
The Rebels return to action on Sunday, Feb. 14, with a two-game set at Eller Media Stadium. UNLV will face UC Davis at noon prior to a 4:00 pm contest with Loyola Marymount.
