LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (3-1) defeated the UC Davis Aggies (3-2) by a 3-2 tally Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium in the final day of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning, Tayler Aleman delivered the go-ahead hit with a two-run triple to right.
The game was halted at 3:45 pm after a drop-dead time was set by both head coaches prior to first pitch. At the time of stoppage UC Davis was leading by a 5-3 score with UNLV at-bat in the bottom of the seventh.
Marissa Nichols put UNLV on the scoreboard first when she opened up the bottom of the first with a triple down the line in right. Nichols wound up scoring three batters later on an RBI-single by Kendall Fearn.
The Aggies, who threatened offensively in the second inning, got on the board in the fourth with help from a UNLV defensive miscue. With two outs and the bases juiced, Bianca Castillo stepped up as a pinch hitter and hit a roller to second that was misplayed and allowed two runners to score.
The Rebels answered back in the sixth with Aleman's big hit. Jaci Hull and Fearn began the two-out rally with back-to-back singles. With the runners on first and second, Aleman delivered the game-changing hit that bounded to the wall in right.
Traci Odegard (1-1) picked up the victory in 2.1 innings of relief. Odegard relieved Stephanie Bregante following the two-run error in the fourth. She struck out one and gave up only one hit.
Bregante earned a no-decision in 3.2 innings of her start. She gave up two unearned runs on one hit, walked four and fanned two.
Dana Waldusky (1-2) was saddled with the loss for UC Davis. Waldusky tossed six innings and gave up three runs on six hits. She struck out five, as well.
The win extends UNLV's overall winning streak to three and gives them four straight victories over UC Davis.
The Rebels return to action on later Sunday afternoon (6:00 pm) with a game against Loyola Marymount in the finale of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic.
