Rebels Come Up Roses In Win

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (4-1) defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions (2-3) Sunday night at Eller Media Stadium in the finale of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. The Rebels scored runs in four different innings en route to their 7-3 victory. Alyssia De La Torre highlighted the UNLV offensive with a two-hit effort that included a three-run home run. The win over LMU is the second straight in the head-to-head series and it extends UNLV's overall winning streak to four on the year.

The Rebels put four runs on the scoreboard quickly in the first inning. Marissa Nichols began the frame reaching on an errant throw and was immediately moved to second by a sacrifice bunt. Jaci Hull delivered a double to the gap in right that plated Nichols. Kendall Fearn joined Hull on the base paths via a walk and then came around to score on a three-run bomb by De La Torre.

The teams traded runs in the second with UNLV maintaining its five-run lead. LMU got a single and a run-scoring double for its tally, while the Rebels countered with a double by Nichols that led to her scoring following a throwing error by an outfielder.

LMU pulled within two with two runs in the fourth inning at 5-3. The Lions strung together four straight singles with the third by Kelly Sarginson bringing in both RBI.

Laura Briones got one run back for UNLV with a solo shot to right center to push the score to 6-3.

UNLV added an insurance run in the sixth when Laura King touched home plate. King reached on an error and advanced to third on a double by Nichols. A groundout by Tara Bendt scored King from third to close out the game's scoring.

Kylie Wagner improved to 2-0 on the year with a complete-game effort. Wagner allowed three runs on eight hits. She fanned six batters and walked one.

LMU's Melissa Dykema (1-2) was hit with the loss in three innings of work. Dykema was touched for six runs (one earned) on five hits. She walked two and struck out two.

Molly Medeiros relieved Dykema for the final 3.0 innings of the game. Medeiros gave up one run on three hits and struck out one.

The Rebels return to action on Thursday, Feb. 18 (7:15 pm), when they host the Boise State Broncos in the first night of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
