LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Jamie Smith was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday morning after leading the Lady Rebels to a pair of upset wins at New Mexico and at home on San Diego State. This is the second weekly honor of her career for Smith, and it is the third time UNLV has had a player of the week this season. She shared this week's away with TCU's Emily Carter.
Smith, a 6-0 sophomore forward and native of Kailua, Hawaii, averaged a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds per game while helping UNLV to a 65-59 win at New Mexico on Feb. 10, the team's first win in Albuquerque since 2002. UNLV's 66-59 win at home on Saturday over San Diego State broke a seven-game losing streak to the Aztecs.
Against the Lobos, Smith posted 10 points and seven rebounds, and hit two-of-three from three-point range. With UNLV holding a four-point lead in the final minute, Smith came up with a steal and connected on two free throws to seal the road victory. In the win over SDSU, Smith helped UNLV rally from a 23-7 deficit by scoring nine points during a 19-2 run to bring the Lady Rebels back into the game. She would finish with 14 points, 15 rebounds (including seven offensive), and was two steals away from a triple-double with eight. The eight steals tied for the second-most ever in a MWC contest, and is tied for the fifth-best every by a Lady Rebel in a game.
UNLV (12-13, 5-6 MWC), riding a two-game win streak and winners of four of its last five games, returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 when it hosts Utah at 7 pm in the Cox Pavilion.
