SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - The No. 23 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 9-under-par 279 on Wednesday and is in third place, one shot out of the lead, at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is being played at the par-72, 6,917-yard Leilehua Golf Course.
California and SMU both fired 10-under 278 and are tied for the lead at the 15-team event. UNLV is one shot back, while Nevada, Reno (7-under 281) and Texas A&M (3-under 285) round out the top five.
California's Stephen Hale leads all individuals by three shots after shooting a 7-under 65. Derek Ernst leads all Rebel players and is in a three-way tie for second place at 4-under 68. California's Eric Mina and SMU's Ben Tewes are also tied for second.
Jeremiah Wooding shot 3-under 69 and is in a four-way tie for fifth place, while Brett Kanda is also in the top 10 for the Rebels as he is in a 10-way tie for ninth place at 2-under 70.
Other Rebel players: Colby Smith shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 26th and Kevin Penner shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 36th.
The tournament will continue with 18 holes on Thursday and conclude with 18 more on Friday. Shotgun starts each day will begin at 8 a.m. HST.
