LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (6-2) had its six-game winning streak snapped by the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (5-2) Friday night from Eller Media Stadium during the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. The Rainbow Wahine smashed five home runs and scored runs in all but one inning en route to their 11-0 victory.
The Rebels came into the contest riding an 11-3, five-inning win over San Diego, but could not match the same offensive production from earlier.
Hawai'i led from the get-go, as they got the first of two home runs by Melissa Gonzalez in the first inning. Gonzalez stepped up with one on and one out and smashed a shot to left-center for a quick 2-0 lead.
The Rainbow Wahine added two more home runs in the third with Gonzalez's second and the first of two from Alex Aguirre. Gonzalez's was a lead-off, solo shot, while Aguirre's was for two scores.
Hawai'i added six more runs in the final two innings of play with a tally in the fourth and five more in the fifth.
UNLV mustered four hits against Kaia Parnaby (3-0), as she went 5.0 innings for the win. Parnaby struck out seven and walked three. She got out of a few jams, as she forced the Rebels to leave seven runners stranded on the night.
Stephanie Bregante (1-1) was hit with the loss in 4.1 frames of work. Bregante allowed all 11 runs on 13 hits, while walking four and striking out three.
Traci Odegard entered in relief to record the final two outs in the fifth and had one strikeout.
The Rebels return to action Saturday afternoon at 3:45 pm, when they take on the #21 Northwestern Wildcats.
