FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State hit 10 of its first 15 shots in the second half to open up a 22-point lead on the way to a 65-49 victory over UNLV in Mountain West Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in Moby Arena. The loss dropped the Lady Rebels to 12-15 on the year, 5-8 in the league while CSU improved to 13-12, 5-7 in MWC play.
It was a four-point game in the final minute of the first half, but the Rams came out on fire to begin the second stanza with seven quick points for a 34-20 lead with 17:59 left in the game. UNLV stayed within distance of CSU for the next three minutes, with Kalie Scanlon's three-pointer making it a 40-28 score at 14:48.
Bonnie Barbee answered back with a trey on the other end for the Rams, starting a 12-2 run over the next three minutes. Barbee capped the run with her second three-pointer of the half, giving CSU a 52-30 edge with 11:48 left. The closest UNLV came the rest of the game was 14 points, on a pair of Mia Bell free throws at the 4:04 mark which made the score 57-43.
In a first half that saw a total of five lead changes, the game was tied at 13-13 with just over eight minutes to go when CSU's Kim Mestdagh took over for the Rams. In the final eight minutes of the first half, the Ram guard hit four three-pointers, while the Lady Rebels were held to just one field goal and five free throws over that stretch. Mestdagh's trey from the corner with 23 seconds left gave CSU its largest lead of the half, 27-20.
Bell was the only Lady Reb in double-figures with 10 points, while Markiell Styles added eight and Sandrine Nzeukou seven. UNLV shot 30.4% (17-of-56) for the game, was 14-of-19 at the free throw line for 73.7% and struggled from long range, making just one of 19 three-point attempts for a season-low 5.9%.
Mestagh paced CSU with 23 points which included six three-pointers. Barbee and Megan Heimstra both added 10 each. CSU shot 35.8% (24-of-67) from the floor, was 9-of-25 from three-point range for 36%, and 8-of-10 at the free throw line for 80%.
UNLV will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 23 with a 4:30 pm (PST) contest at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
