LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (6-3) lost its second consecutive game in an 8-0 decision to the 21st-ranked Northwestern Wildcats (4-5) Saturday night from Eller Media Stadium during the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. The Wildcats used two three-run innings to take hold of the game.
After two scoreless innings, Northwestern broke the tie with three scores in the third. The Wildcats loaded the bases with help from a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Emily Haug delivered the shot that put NU up 2-0 with a two-run single to deep center. Nicole Pauly followed Haug's hit with a double to left that scored one more.
The game remained at 3-0 until the Wildcats came to bat in the sixth. NU put its first two batters on via an error and a single before Adrienne Monka hit a three-run home run to right to extend the lead to 6-0.
NU scored twice more in the seventh to take an 8-0 lead.
Jessica Smith (3-0) pitched a complete game for the Wildcats and was only touched for three hits, while collecting five strikeouts and one walk.
Two of UNLV's three hits were amassed by Marissa Nichols, who extended her hitting streak to eight games. Nichols has a team-best five multiple-hit games on the year.
Kylie Wagner (3-1) suffered her first loss as a Rebel in 5.0 innings of work. Wagner surrendered six runs (five earned) on seven hits. She walked four, as well.
Traci Odegard relieved Wagner for the final two innings of the game and was touched for two runs on two hits. She issued two walks and struck out two.
The Rebels return to action Sunday morning at 11:15 am, when the Indiana Hoosiers visit Eller Media Stadium.
