LAKEWOOD, Calif. - The UNLV Rebels (15-8) knocked off the Purdue Boilermakers (6-9), 7-3, Friday night during the first day of the Long Beach State Invitational held at Mayfair Park. UNLV extended its winning streak to three games, as they scored five in the first inning to give Kylie Wagner (6-1) plenty of run support in the circle.
The Rebels brought 10 players to the plate in the first inning that resulted in five runs off of two hits and one Purdue error. Suzie Rzegocki (4-6) loaded up the bases by sandwiching walks to Paige Emerson and Jaci Hull around hitting Tara Bendt with a pitch. Rzegocki was called for two illegal pitches that brought in Emerson and Bendt for a quick 2-0 Rebel lead. A walk to Ashli Holland ended Rzegocki's day in the circle giving UNLV runners on the corners. Kendall Fearn then welcomed reliever Erika Petruzzi to the game with an infield single to load the bases. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Alyssia De La Torre and Laura Briones gave UNLV two more runs and a 4-0 lead. Tayler Aleman closed out the scoring with an RBI-single to score Fearn.
Purdue got two runs back in the bottom of the first off an RBI-single by Maia Monchek and a throwing error by Fearn.
UNLV scored once more in the second. Bendt led off the inning with a walk and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Holland knocked her in with a run-scoring single.
The Boilermakers scored their last run in the third off an RBI-single by Shelby Krammer.
Holland closed out the game's scoring with another RBI-single in the fourth. Emerson scored on Holland's base knock after initially reaching on a single and moving to second on a hit by Bendt.
Wagner pitched her fourth complete game of the year with the win. She allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Rzegocki lost without recording an out in the first inning. She surrendered four runs without allowing a hit and walked four.
Petruzzi threw the 7.9 inning in relief and gave up three runs on eight hits. She struck out two and walked two, as well.
The Rebels are back in action Saturday afternoon with consecutive games against San Diego (1:30 pm) and Notre Dame (3:45 pm) at Mayfair Park.
