First-Round Match Victory, Second Suspended

March 21, 2010

MARANA, Ariz. - The No. 8 UNLV men's golf team won its first-round match and will complete second-round play on Monday as darkness cut play short on Sunday during the first day at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship, which is being held at The Ritz Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.

The Rebels, who are the No. 6 seed at the 16-team event, got past 11th-seeded Middle Tennessee in the first round, 3.5-1.5 and advanced to face third-seeded Texas A&M in the championship bracket's second round. In that second-round match, Texas A&M held the lead as darkness suspended play.

In its first-round match against Middle Tennessee, Colby Smith defeated Jason Millard (1 up), Eddie Olson defeated Craig Smith (8 and 7) and Jeremiah Wooding defeated Brad Simons (4 and 3). Derek Ernst and Kent Bulle halved their match, while Hunter Green defeated Brett Kanda (2 and 1).

Olson's 8 and 7 win tied a Callaway Collegiate Match Play record.

When second round play was suspended, Jordan Russell had defeated Kanda 5 and 4, while Andrea Pavan led Ernst 3 up with three holes to play. Cameron Peck and Smith were all square with three holes to go, while Ignacio Elvira led Olson 2 up with three to play and Conrad Shindler led Wooding 2 up with four to go.

Only seven individual matches were completed during the second round and no overall team contests settled. The second round will continue at 8 a.m. MT on Monday morning with the third round scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Tuesday.
