MARANA, Ariz. - Second-round play at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship wrapped up Monday morning after it was suspended because of darkness on Sunday evening. The No. 8 UNLV men's golf team, seeded sixth at the 16-team event, fell to third-seeded Texas A&M by the score of 4-1 in the second round. The tournament is being played at The Ritz Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.
Colby Smith was the lone winner for UNLV during the second round as he defeated Cameron Peck, 1 up. Derek Ernst lost to Andrea Pavan, 4 and 2, Brett Kanda lost to Jordan Russell, 5 and 4, Eddie Olson lost to Ignacio Elvira, 2 and 1, and Jeremiah Wooding lost to Conrad Shindler, 1 up.
With the loss, the Rebels moved to the fifth-place bracket where they defeated 10th-seed San Diego, 3-2, later on Monday. Ernst, Smith and Olson all posted wins to help UNLV advance to the fifth-place match tomorrow, which will be against 13th-seeded Iowa. The Hawkeyes defeated top-seeded Stanford 3.5-1.5 during the third round to advance to face the Rebels. Iowa lost to 12th-seeded Colorado State, 3-2, while Stanford lost to eighth-seeded USC, 3-2, in the second round.
UNLV's results against San Diego: Ernst defeated Scott Brace, 3 and 2, Smith defeated Kenneth McCready, 5 and 3, and Olson defeated Jason Shano, 3 and 2. Kanda lost to Alex Ching, 4 and 3, while Wooding was defeated by Gunner Wiebe, 4 and 2.
USC and 15th-seeded New Mexico will play for the tournament championship on Tuesday, while all 14 of the other teams will also conclude the tournament with a fourth-round match.
