MARANA, Ariz. - The No. 8 UNLV men's golf team lost its fourth-round match on Tuesday to Iowa, 3-2, at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship, which was played at The Ritz Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.
The sixth-seeded Rebels faced the 13th-seeded Hawkeyes in the fifth-place match after both teams went 2-1 in their matches over the first two days of the 16-team tournament.
Derek Ernst and Jeremiah Wooding each recorded victories against Iowa, but Colby Smith, Brett Kanda and Eddie Olson each dropped their matches. Ernst defeated Brad Hopfinger, 4 and 3, while Wooding won over Brad George, 2 and 1. Vince India beat Smith, 2 up, Barrett Kelpin defeated Kanda, 2 up, and Chris Brant beat Olson, 4 and 3.
New Mexico, which was the No. 15 seed, defeated eighth-seeded USC to win the championship. The Lobos became the lowest seeded team to claim the team title at the event. Colorado State, the 12th-seed, beat third-seed Texas A&M, 3-2, to claim third place.
UNLV's next action will be April 2-3, at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
