Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (11-7) exacted some revenge on the Portland State Vikings (6-10) Saturday afternoon with their 8-0, five-inning victory on the second day of the Eller Media Stadium Classic. After nearly rallying in defeat to Portland State Friday night, the Rebel offense scattered nine hits and scored five unearned runs, while Jessica O'Connor tossed her second consecutive shutout allowing only two hits to PSU batters Saturday.
UNLV got things going in the first inning with two runs off one hit and the first of two Viking errors on the day. The Rebels loaded the bases with one out for Kendall Fearn, who hit a grounder to Arielle Wiser at short. Wiser misplayed the ball and allowed Tara Bendt and Jaci Hull to score from scoring position.
Hull stepped up in the second inning with runners on the corners and two out and quickly delivered a two-run triple down the line in right.
The Rebels were held scoreless in the third, but made up for it with three free tallies in the fourth. Bendt began the offensive reaching on a two-out error by Alexa Morales at second. Anna Bertrand (4-3) then walked Hull and Ashli Holland to load up the bases for Fearn again. Fearn welcomed the occasion with open arms and laced a three-run double to the gap in right-center. Fearn's hit ended the day for Bertrand in the circle as Tori Rogers.
Rogers gave up the eighth and final run to UNLV in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Hull laced a double to deep left that brought home Amber Petersen to end the game.
O'Connor picked up her second straight win in as many outings. She threw a one-hit blanking of Weber State on Friday night and followed it up with the two-hit effort against PSU. She struck out five and walked four, as well.
Bertrand was an unlucky recipient of the loss, as she gave up seven runs (two earned) on seven hits in 3.2 innings. She struck out five and walked three.
Rogers threw one inning and was touched for one run on two hits, while walking two.
The Rebels are back in action Saturday afternoon with a 3:45 pm affair with the New Mexico State Aggies in the EMS Classic.
