Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (12-8) suffered a 5-1 loss to the #13 California Golden Bears (16-4) Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Eller Media Stadium Classic. The Rebels fell behind early in the game and never recovered although they attempted a rally in the fourth inning. The loss snapped UNLV's three-game winning streak. Overall, UNLV went 3-2 on the weekend, while Cal was a perfect 5-0.

California staked itself to a 3-0 lead with a single run in the second and two more in the third. Lindsey Ziegernhirt led off the second with a double and came around to score on a two-out single by Jolene Henderson. Jace Williams was responsible for both tallies in the third with a two-run single.

UNLV's offense got going in the fourth when they scored one run off of four hits. Marissa Nichols started things with a single up the middle. Nichols then moved around the base path after Jaci Hull and Ashli Holland connected on back-to-back singles. Holland was credited with an RBI on her hit to left. Briones joined Hull and Holland on the bases following a single of her own, but the trio was left stranded when the third out was recorded.

The Golden Bears scored twice more in the fifth to push ahead 5-1. Williams was responsible for both runs in the inning when she knocked in Valerie Arioto, who reached on a double, and scored as well following a Rebel error.

Henderson (6-2) notched the win in complete-game fashion. She allowed only one run on five hits, while striking out six.

Jessica O'Connor (3-2) was saddled with the loss in 3.0 innings of her start. O'Connor surrendered three runs on four hits. She struck out one, but walked four.

Traci Odegard relieved O'Connor and pitched the final four innings. Odegard gave up two runs (one earned)on four hits. She also struck out three.

The Rebels are back in action Wednesday afternoon (March 10) at 2:00 pm, when they host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in a doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled at 2:00 pm.
